I remember as a 15 year-old girl having a 3 day pass and painstakingly planning each outfit I was going wear to "see the world". First morning my new fluoro shoes gave me blisters so bad I had to wear thongs bought from the chemist for a week - in all my family's Expo photos I'm scowling ....

Expo 88 for me was all about the stuffed koalas offered by the Queensland Teachers union of all things! They wore a cape, and particularly 80s style sun glasses. My fave pavillions? The Swiss, and the New Zealand. This was mainly to do with the fact their colour scheme was red, and green. To be fair, I was 7 at the time!

Passport stamps galore, monorail, John Farnham gig on floating stage, chocolate factory, fireworks, huge queues at every cultural stall

I was ten - very excited - on holidays from the country with one big day to spend at Expo! I ran straight for the monorail... unfortunately the boys in front of me were suffering after a big night on the booze and had a bit of a spew before they got on... needless to say, I spent the rest of the day feeling sick... ruined my big day at Expo!! Boo... :(

I was only young then however my fondest memories of Expo 88 was getting my photo with the platypus at the front gate and going on all the rides at the theme park at Expo . Plus the laser show was very cool at night time too !!!
The pavilions I remember were NZ because you watched it while sitting on a sheep and Qld was a boat ride and Switzerland was a chairlift - all the good ones !
Oh and we got to fill out a passport with stamps you collected along the way ! :-))
Cheers, Nic

I remember waking up at home one morning, after a particularly big day (and night) at the Brittania Inn, with a 5kg block of chocolate beside my bed. You see I had to walk past the Cadbury Pavillion to catch the train home so I must have got the munchies big time. I don't remember buying it but there it was at home with me when I woke up. I must have been a sight on that train ride home..........good times !!!!!!

I remember seeing Jimmy Barnes on the Riverstage, and he blew out half of the "Turbo" system just a couple of songs into his set. The "Turbo" system was that massive array of speakers that curved around the top of the stage.

I was overlooking the river stage while working at Expo when during rehearsals with LRB, Glen Frey, who was a guest vocalist from the Eagles was screaming at the rest of the guys while on the mic, to play his songs in the right key! This was well before the gates opened that day.

Did you guys know that the FM 104 rocktower that overlooked the riverstage at Expo 88 where FM 104/MMM broadcast from, is now the office out where the ferries leave from Cleveland to North Straddie.

Does anyone have their recording from the MMM recording studio at the foot of the rocktower? They used to be featured most mornings with Bill Heally on the MMM breakfast show.

I remember getting a phone call from the Expo Police who had detained my underage brother who was drunk and caught urinating into Brisbane River next to the Riverstage, he gave the police my name and date of birth, and I got the phone call that I was being evicted from Expo and that my season pass was being confiscated, trouble was I was on the phone thinking I was being set up by a mate, and didnt believe a word of it until I hung up the phone and they called back with the same story, I ended up driving into town to pick him up, he missed the concert he had been waiting all day to see, and I got banned for something I never did... Looking back it was pretty funny, but not at the time.
Cheers

unfortunately my experience with expo 88 ruined my career, being from the bush (3hrs west of brisbane), i had the opportunity to do a panel beaters apprenticship which involved doing a 16 week course at ithica tafe college, but because of expo i could'nt get any accomodation and the only available accomodation i could'nt afford so hi tailed back to the bush where i finally landed a job after 3 years . thanks expo 88 !!!

I remember standing in the hot sun for hours just to get into the US and Canadian Pavillions. My favourite pavillion was the swiss one with snow and a chair lift...hey, I was only 8 at the time. I still have my expo passport and stuffed platypus!

I had a 24-hour pavilion pass as I worked with the Qld Govt at the time. It was the gateway to the most awesome parties - meeting pavilion staff from all over the world, collecting pins. Who needed clubs, when you had Expo? Who could forget the queues but especially for the NZ pavilion icecream! I watched the fireworks nearly every night and had a plan to dine at every pavilion's restaurant throughout the six months. It was great fun and really friendly. Awesome vodkas in the Russian restaurant. Who knew there were honey-flavoured and fruit-flavoured vodkas back then? It was Brisbane's coming of age. As a journo I even helped sell Expo 88 to the Japanese! Bring back the people on the pedalcabs!

I had a daily pass and went in every lunch hour as I worked at South Brisbane for a Govt Dept. Also got married in Aug 88 with guests popping into expo between the ceremony and reception at Mayfair Crest. We took a helicopter flight over the site as a wedding gift to ourselves. Such great memories.

We had been living in a remote rural area and brought the kids down intending to buy a one day ticket. We stood awestruck in the queue before opening time and decided on the spot to buy the 3 day pass. We stayed until stumps and returned every fortnight. Even though we had the 3 full days there we still only covered a fraction of the event.
I remember feeling so proud of Queensland being able to say to the world - Hey look at us and what we can do!
The whole of Brisbane seemed to have a party atmosphere (except parliament house which at the time had its own set of problems).
The kids loved the whole event and we later visited the corrugated iron zoo on a visit to Adelaide. My daughter loved being able to say to her South Australian cousins that she already had photos of her on the animals when they were in Brisbane but would have her photo taken by them again.
It was a wonderful experience for the whole family with once in a lifetime memories created which will last with us forever.

Moved from Syd to Bris in 1988 on work transfer with hubby - could not find anywhere to rent - except for Eagleby (was scary then) went to Expo on the busiest day and spent hours lining up to get into NZ pavillion, it was a hot day, we visited the more smaller pavillions just to see something

Before Expo 88 opened, my Mum almost got a job there (she was destined for a holiday overseas instead). The family got to see inside the gates before it was finished. We saw rehearsals of parades and I got to meet Bruce Paige while he was reporting at one of the monorail's stations. He was stopped long enough to talk to me and give me an autograph. I was going on 15 at the time and I remember it as though it was last year and have followed his career since.
We also met the 'Toward 2000' team at the next monorail station and Carmel Traverse when she was expecting her first baby. My brother and I had seasons passes and went nearly every week... sometimes missing school. I believe that Brisbane has never been the same; instead it grew from the experience.

I remember coming back from a break to start my second shift for the day on the Kookaburra Queen and finding one of the chefs in the a la carte dining room had thrown all the wattle we had carefully put in the vases on the dining tables into the river because it made him sneeze!
