The Cage (Brisbane)
Who are tradies and who aren't tradies?
Posted by Triple M Friday 11 July, 2008 12:48 PM
It's time for the Cage's Tradie for a Lady event on July 31. So we want to know: who are tradies and who aren't tradies?
It's time for The Cage's Tradie for a Lady. Where we try to pair a single tradie with a single lady and let the love begin. But the same old arguments arise as to what is and what isn't a trade.
What do you think?

If you don't start by being an apprentice, it isn't a trade
Posted by Mable Withcote Friday 11 July, 2008 12:53 PM
Well I'm a watchmaker, does that count
Posted by lionel Friday 11 July, 2008 12:55 PM
I heard someone say cobblers aren't tradies. Bullsh*t they aren't. this isn't just sparkies and chippies is it?
Posted by Kerry James Friday 11 July, 2008 12:57 PM
c'mon show the ladies - I'm desperate
Posted by Phil McCann Friday 11 July, 2008 01:44 PM
Now thats a hard question either you have your trade papers or you dont or your an apprentice.
I was married to a Boilermaker/Welder many years ago now im engaged to a Chippy my older son is a apprentice Greenkeeper at Brookwater Golf Club, so i would say that they all quailify for fair dinkum tradies not the pretend ones. When a person is a Multi Skilled worker (Jack of all trades master of none) they take the titles of the genuine tradies.

Hmm, Could it be said that tradies work with their hands/physically? Has to be broader than chippies, plumbers and brickies etc. What about wrought iron workers, craftsmen, jewellers, etc? Surely these are tradies? What say?

if truckies are tradies then so are cabbies
we go to cab school & get a certificate

The following in the voting list are definately not tradies:
1. Barber
2. Chef
3. Baker
4. Fireman
Tradies are men who get out in the sun and get down and dirty.

Whilst firemen are definately HOT they are not tradies. What about the builders? Why aren't they on your list. I'd do a builder any day!
Posted by Debbie Monday 14 July, 2008 04:13 PM
An apprenticeship = a trade.. simple as that. you slog it out for 3 - 5 yrs to earn that piece of paper that classifies you as a TRADIE
Posted by Andrew Monday 14 July, 2008 05:30 PM
Brickies, concerters, builders, plumbers, sparkies etc... and\y job that the guy comes home dirty and sweaty :)
Posted by Leesa Monday 14 July, 2008 07:33 PM
The definition of a tradesman is quite simple. A persom who completes an apprenticeship or one who is rpl and granted the status of tradesman. Unfortunately anyone else cannot be considered a tradesman. My brother is a heavy haulage owner operator who is very skilled but is not a tradesman.

Trade papers maketh the Man.

If a tradie is a guy that's completed an apprenticeship, does that mean that male hairdressers are tradies too? Technically?
Posted by Lana Tuesday 15 July, 2008 02:42 PM
mechanics count right. i am a first year in motor mechanics and i have been single for about 6 or 7 years and i am 21 that aint right.

A tradesman to me is a person who completes a apprenticeship of normally 4 years on bugger all pay and then becomes a tradie on big pay to all those plumbers out there heh nothing like sifting around in other peoples feaces thats why the big money downside find it hard to fix a tap washer in their own home

I've been a truck driver since i was 16, drive anything from a 3ton tipper to a roadtrain and as well as machinery. As in a trade if you dont know what your doing then you get hurt or hurt someone

Isn't the tradie the man who wears blue and not white ? If they push pens instead of wheel barrows and screw drivers, they not tradies:) Doesn't it takes 4-5 yrs to learn to use the tools and oh gee only about 1 yr to learn to push a pen ? GO THE TRADIE. Cheers.

um, im a picture hanger/mirror hanger, and have been for 5 years, does that count?

A tradie to me is , usually a very young man that has to live on nothing and bludge of there parents until they become a tradie. then they are the most handiest people to have around , they are also cheeky and fun guys cause they know what hard work is and they don't mind getting there hands dirty in lots of ways am i allowed to say that mmm

Hi, the tradies are already the guys earning all the money & the chicks are aparrently choosing the toolbelt over the tie these days. I am neither a tradie or a lady, what have you got for the rest of us MMM?
Posted by Al Hunt Thursday 17 July, 2008 07:20 AM
Chefs normally do an apprenticeship, so I think they, and male hairdressers, should be considered tradies.
Posted by Bron Thursday 17 July, 2008 07:49 AM
well, what about on-site engineers and surveyors? they get out and about, work same hours as tradies, drive utes, rough as guts, but still earn a very respectable wage and (without wanting to put any other tradies down) the brains to boot. both jobs can be started as a Cadet, which works the same as an apprentice or trainee...

Trades is anything practical, in which you work with your hands. Hairdressers do an apprenticeship, work 9-5, but don't get dirty. But Civil Engineers go to university - but are barely indoors. I don't think it's that simple!

I'm not a tradie right now, but I've slogged it out for a few years as a labourer. The one time i took an apprenticeship with east coast i did it for a couple weeks and got screwed around by them (through no fault of my own) as a carpenter. So now I'm a factory worker, 8 - 5 and I can say for all the other guys out there in the same boat, most of us do just as much dirty work as 'tradies'. The only difference is that tradies after a few years get a significant pay rise, while the rest of us are left hanging out to dry. I'm wondering what you've got in store for the rest of us.
Posted by Derrick Thursday 17 July, 2008 06:34 PM
hairdressers and chefs are not tradies. the end. ps - bron, why should male hairdressers be considered tradies and not female ones? that's sexist,
Posted by Jenni Thursday 17 July, 2008 08:58 PM
A Fireman is definately a tradie as he starts on shit money and has to do 4 years of training as well as passing theory exams every year to advance his pay as well as his firefighting skills. There is 4 levels of firefighters ending as a senior firefighter.after 4 years. As for those who say fire fighters dont get down and get dirty then maybe they should try doing a firefighters job for a while ....no takers I bet??
Posted by Rod Coombes Friday 18 July, 2008 08:52 AM
i think a tradie should be anyone that uses tools to earn a living&does manual labour for the public on an hourly rate, not just someone that has done an apprenticeship, because a hairdresser for example is not trade work otherwise you should include doctors etc.i am a car audio/security technician that installs cruise controls etc same as a mechanic would do in some workshops but i didnt do an apprenticeship just 23 yrs of actual work to learn what i know but i wouldnt be able to compete against buffed chippies etc that women seem to want although i am more of a tradie than some others listed.

Any dude who has a job that gets his hands dirty...anyone who doesn't wear a suit daily!!
Posted by Ang Saturday 19 July, 2008 06:58 PM
tradies are anybody who works in the building or machinery areas, anyone who has to work hard but gets paided for it
Posted by josh Saturday 19 July, 2008 07:23 PM
i say let them all come cause im gonna be there and the more the merrier!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by michelle d Sunday 20 July, 2008 07:57 PM
It should be as simple as this - if you've done a period of supervised training and come out the other end with a "TRADE CERTIFICATE" then you are a Tradie ... otherwise you're only dreaming!
Posted by Tony Monday 21 July, 2008 08:47 AM
tradies are any 1 that starts off as an apprentice its simple. and im an apprentice can i sign up? i may not have a cert but i can outperform some trademens, sometime i have no respect for those lazy bum tradies.

Is there any chance of holding a similar thing for the Gay Lesbian community. I'm a forklift driver and a Jill of all trades. I consider myself a tradie and am looking for a lady or another female tradie
Posted by Jackie Tuesday 22 July, 2008 04:25 PM
Well I'm Fit, I work 90 to 100 hours a week, i make dam good money, I'm self employed, I've got a ticket to work,

PS i'm a cabbie
Posted by Jeremy Grice Wednesday 23 July, 2008 01:03 AM

Posted by darren Thursday 24 July, 2008 03:39 PM
Here here Tony...do the "time", get the trade paper...then call yourself a TRADIE !!
Posted by Phil Thursday 24 July, 2008 04:13 PM
I agree with Phil. As a Sparkie you start off as an apprentice, learn the Trade you want to qualify in, be it 4-5yrs. YES, it's a long journey and you start out doing crap but that is just the rights of passage to becoming a Tradesperson. In my own opinion if you are a labourer your not a tradesperson. Don't get me wrong our great land was developed by great labourers but at the end of the day its the tradies butt that is on the line if something goes wrong, WITH the possibility of of loosing your trade licence that you worked so hard to achieve. In a nutshell, an apprentice is an apprentice (your learning), Tradeperson (Tradie) your licenced/qualified. Technician you are skilled/qualified in your field of work but not recognised as Trade Certified by the QLD Gov. Labourers, much the same as apprentices but have a higher earning capacity but can be limited. Sorry if I have offended anyone but thats how it is.

Oh my, a lot of awesome tradies out there, but I have to say "Richard you've done it me for me .... it's love at first sight on the web" !! xoxo
Posted by Mystie Saturday 26 July, 2008 02:47 PM
Hairdressers apparently don't get dirty huh????!!! Its obvious to me you don't know any hairdressers!!! eh!! Jenni.
Go get educated!
Posted by Andrea Sunday 27 July, 2008 01:56 PM
wear the fluoro colours and do the hard yards.... you're a tradie in my eyes.
Posted by Jules Sunday 27 July, 2008 07:44 PM
I did 3 years (not weeks) in a classroom before I was allowed to actually touch anything and then plenty of on the job training after that before I got my "Certificate". A 3 week course at TAFE does not a Tradie make. Go the sparkies :-)

Any guy that works with his hands is a Tradie!!!!
Posted by Tracy Wednesday 30 July, 2008 01:48 PM
Don't care, its bloody discrimination to all non tradies who would love the opportunitiy to meet a lady. What about the rest of us honest genuine blokes?
Posted by McFear Wednesday 30 July, 2008 03:58 PM
You can only call yourself a tradie if you have the trade certificate to prove it. Otherwise you are just a shit kicker.
