It's Daylight Savings Time Again
Posted by Triple M Monday 29 September, 2008 02:53 PM
It's that time again as the other states go on Daylight Savings at the end of this week, while we stay on the normal average Estern Standard Time.
Those in the South East Corner are in favour to bring them in line with the other states. Thos outside of the SE corner are resooundly against it. Because they live in tropical areas where it makes absolutely no sense.
So here are the options:
- Queensland goes on Daylight Savings Time (The 'stuff the rest of the state' option)
- Queensland remains on Eastern Standard Time (The 'stuff the rest of the country option)
- The South East Corner goes on DST and the rest of the state stays on EST (The "everyone is happy but the state is split in two" option)
So what do you think?

We need daylight saving in the SE
corner. It would make a huge difference to our family as it would be light enough after dinner for outdoor activitied like walks, bike rides etc

I think the 3rd option is the best. Because during daylight savings Wil & Lehmo and The Spoonman are not live and this is really unfair to us Brisbane people who love Triple M. Other than changing the show times (viable for The Spoonman, but not viable for Wil & Lehmo) there is nothing that can be done. If we can't beat em - join em.

daylight saving must be implemented in this state, its just stupid not having it here, we should, if anything have it in the south east corner, its just a joke. [And Drive and Spoonman wouldent be delayed so we can actually call in :-)]

Why do we have to differ from all other states what harm can it do fall in line and be part of Australia no wonder down south we are called aliens if we can't even agree with teh rest of the country on time.

I grew up in Melbourne when i came to Queensland all i heard was about the farmers peoples curtains what aload of.... Its about time Queensland got in line with the other states and move forward instead of backwards.

I think that we should go with the "stuff the rest of the state option" and put the whole of queensland on daylight savings who cares about the handfull of people living in places like mount isa when there are millions of people living in brisbane.

KEEP Eastern Standard Time. Rather than inconvenience everyone else just ask your boss to start and finish work an hour early.....easy!
Posted by Kwaka 600 Thursday 2 October, 2008 07:49 AM
Sorry Yvonne, your argument doesnt stack up! If you have dinner before your walk you have lost the benefit of extra sunlight sitting eating. Other way around you are having dinner at 9pm after your walk in the daylight. Either way it just doesnt work.
Better idea is to lobby for school work etc to start an hour earlier like in many overseas countries.
Posted by kwaka 600 Thursday 2 October, 2008 07:57 AM
It's crazy that you don't have daylight saving up here. The sun's up at 4am!!! Move that hour of daylight to the evening and spend the extra time in the yard or at the beach after work
Posted by Rowena Spiranac Thursday 2 October, 2008 08:43 AM
I think that we should intorduce daylight savings into Qld. It's not about extending the hours of daylight just a better ability to use them. I would rather have the extra time at the end of the day then having to wake up at 4.30 in the morning to get the full benefit of all the daylight hours.
Posted by Helen Thursday 2 October, 2008 01:38 PM
We really need daylight savings in Qld, even if we split the state.
Brisbane is already east of sydney which means our time should be ahead, not behind,Come on Ms Bligh bring in daylight savings.Or Krudd tell Ms Bligh she has to bring it in....

cmon QLD, don't be backwards, get on board with the rest of the country as well our neighbours. Get an extra hour for after work activities even if we choose option 3
Posted by Doug ex kiwi Thursday 2 October, 2008 09:29 PM
I remember the DS trials in the 70's ...... it was great. We need DS in the great SE for business and recreation. Option 3 for me
Posted by Peter Friday 3 October, 2008 07:19 AM
What a Joke..
Every year we debate the same issue. Bring back DS
We had it for a couple of years in the early 90's. Which was great. Qld has has far more people living here now lots from down south who have all lived with and enjoyed the benefits of DS Are we the Sunshine State or the backward state.
Posted by Craig Friday 3 October, 2008 08:26 AM
Qld needs daylight saving. there isn't any valid arguments for not having daylight saving and keeping the East Coast all in the same time zone.
Posted by Karen Friday 3 October, 2008 08:32 AM
Not this again! It's simple. If you like DS so much there are four other states you can choose to live in. Obviously I choose no. 2.
Have some consideration for those born and bred queenslanders who have lived through past trials.
Think about it. If DS is so wonderful why don't we already have it. There must be a good reason why people didn't want it.
If you like the extra daylight so much, here's a novel idea, get up early. Morning is the best part of the day anyway.

DLS for SE Qld. Don't you understand that the whole of Qld doesn't need. And the old story about spending the extra hour outside doing stuff is very poor. The sunlight is there and you can use the sunlight hours any time you get yourself organised. Talk about being driven by the media and business. Yes sheep you can move with the mob and bleet like the rest of the mob! Take note Nth & Gold coast and Brisbane is NOT Qld.Haven't we had a referendum to decided this. Grow up.
Posted by Narelle Friday 3 October, 2008 08:38 AM
DLS is awesome. Queensland prides itself on being the sunny state and having such a great outdoor lifestyle, so why wouldn't we want daylight savings so we can actually utilise the sunshine especially during the week when you can actually go out and do things after work. No to mention making the sun come up and hour later isn't a bad thing, who really wants the sun streaming in at 4.30 in the morning.

We moved to Australia in part because of the environment but we work in offices with no natural daylight, we get home and 5 mins later its dark. We visited Melbourne at Christmas - thats the Australia we want but in Brisbane- long evenings and time to catch up with mates without the need for night vision googles- come on - get over it - just get us in tune with reality.
Posted by Audrey Friday 3 October, 2008 09:14 AM
The rest of Australia already thinks Queenslanders are backward - the decision of the state goverment not to take on daylight saving proves it. Let the farmers have their own time zone. As someone who leaves home in the early hours of the morning and doesn't get home until late it would be nice to enjoy some twilight hours with my family. Queensland is beautiful - daylight saving would allow us to enjoy it more.

Why not nothing like extra daylight hours.

Daylight saving for SEQ. It makes sense to have light when most people are awake (evening) rather than at 4 something a.m when most people are asleep. It's how the human brain works... it might reduce the road toll too.
Posted by Michael Friday 3 October, 2008 10:04 AM
I totally agree with Rowena & Helen. Who wants to be awake at 4am, lying in bed getting hot and sticky (I mean from the temperature) and bbqing in the dark at 6pm. We want to enjoy this great state even more and have a bit of quality time after a long day at work.
Posted by Rosie Friday 3 October, 2008 10:11 AM
We are the "Smart State". I think not. To have those few hours of daylight is amazing, the things that can be done. Children go to sleep during the day, so they should be able to go to sleep when it is still light. I am sick of waking up at 5.00 every morning. Come on Queensland, prove how smart we really are. It works for everyone else, why not us?
Posted by Kym Bayliss Friday 3 October, 2008 10:25 AM
option 3, I thihk is the best solution for this state and the rest of the country.I play golf and could play more after work if we had daylight savings. So get on with it and just change.
Posted by Scott Friday 3 October, 2008 11:46 AM
Nike!! [just do it]
IS DON!! [is good]
Daylight after family dinner - what more could you ask for - we can go walking after dinner without any safety concerns.
Posted by Sheillah Friday 3 October, 2008 01:12 PM
DLS has nothing to do with "getting with the times" or doing what they do in other states/counties; DLS is not suited to the Queensland climate or our lifestyle. We do not have a European culture here i.e. start work late, eat late, go to bed late. I love getting up early in the summer because its daylight at 5.00 am going for a bike ride/run/swim/surf when it's cooler rather than the scorching heat or storm effected evening. The majority of people who want DLS do not come from Queensland, so if they don't like, get over it, or go back to where they come from !!
Posted by Jo Teske Friday 3 October, 2008 01:21 PM
no we don't need daylight savings, get over it people. there is nothing wrong with being different! it's not like it's dark at 4 in the arvo here.
Posted by Leesh Saturday 4 October, 2008 12:57 PM
hell no we dont need daylight savings. it is light enough in queensland to do things late into the day as it is. and all you are doing is screwing with your body clock because you are in effect getting up an hour earlier. you dont get any extra hours in the day so who gives a toss. im sick of hearing about it. we have a time zone for a reason, stick to it. big business want it so they can be on the same time as their counterparts in the mexican (south of the border) states. most of the office johnnies who are jumping up and down wanting it have flex time with their hours anyway so start earlier at work and finish earlier and you have your own little version of daylight savings. there are ample daylight hours available to do whatever. and as for daniel, spoken like a true a55hole, screw the rest so long as we are happy. the rest of the state supplies the south east corner as well as the rest of australi but screw them i dont live there.

being from NZ we started daylight savings 25 years ago. We heard all the old stories like the cows would go off their milk. Early risers wouldnt beable to get to sleep in the evening but it all turned out to be a load of bulls--t. That extra hour of day light gave my family & myself quality time together to play sports or go to a park for a picnic. It also gave my the extra day light to work around the house & yard. this government is keeping the people of qld 25 years & 1 hour in the past. They seem to be pandering to the minority over the majority
Posted by paul Sunday 5 October, 2008 01:21 PM
Lets please get in touch with reality and just go with daylight saving. anywonder the rest of the country sees QLD as a backward state!
Posted by Karen Monday 6 October, 2008 01:24 AM
We lose so much in trade and working time to better benefit our health and well being. waht we are doing now getting our jobs done in 4hrs not eight. Wpuld you like to see daylight out side not just thru the window.
Posted by Louise Monday 6 October, 2008 11:01 AM
no it confuses my mother to much she cant work out where the extra hour of daylight comes from so for her sake i say no
Posted by steven Monday 6 October, 2008 01:24 PM
of course we should, like the cows can tell the time, we get told its because of the cows and milking and time of night when kids go to sleep... Could the kids not have dark curtains, and the cows, if u meet a cow who can tell the time let me know and we change clocks not the sun... im from sydney, what can i say its a QLD thing....

The need to go to daylight savings is apparent, what is also apparent is the need for public pressure on our banks. It sickens me that these corporations can be so greedy at the expense of the rest of us! The big aussie banks have had awesome proffits...billions.. and are quick to increase rates at the hint of an RBA increase yet refuse to mirror this eagerness when they drop. Why should we pay extra money as mortage holders for the poor share trading and investment that banks make. They have made a lot of money from RBA rate increases and can surely pass on some savings to those who make up the bulk of their business. Hopefully awesome shows like yours MMM will press this issue. Greed is why the Yank market is in the state it's in now....and guess what..they are being bailed out by people's tax's, go fiugure. The third option makes sense because I moved to Queensland to enjoy the sunshine but we are ripped off cause we miss out on an hours daylight and for people like me that work from 6am-6pm every minute of daylight means everything.but this option at least our hard working farmers will be happy too.
Posted by David Simpson Monday 6 October, 2008 08:32 PM
lets leave the time and daylight hours as they were created. What about the parents of young children trying to put there kids to bed. Do we really need to put the clocks back so it's light at 830pm. this is crazy!
Posted by NO DLS Monday 6 October, 2008 09:02 PM
Isn't this supposed to be the SMART STATE - smarten up and bring in daylight savings. For those of you who don't want it, it's because you don't understand it. There is still only 24 hours in a day and you still live by the clock time - it just utilises all our sunshine by giving us an extra hour of light at night instead of at 4 in the morning. I say, bring it on Queensland and enjoy the benefits.
Posted by Lorraine Tuesday 7 October, 2008 06:01 AM
How does QLD retain the title of the 'smart state' when simple ideas that make sense aren't implemented. QLD has the greatest ability to use Daylight Savings compared to the rest of the country and yet we don't have it....why?? As far as the old QLD gripes of the curtains will fade quicker, the cows wont know what time it is to be milked etc, are all just petty excuses. It has worked fine in the southern states for years, with everyone in agreeance that it is a positive event. Why then is it that QLD thinks it is either better or different to the rest of the country by not joining in with daylight savings? For those that travel to and from work for upto an hour or more, by the time you get home it is either dark or just about. On another note, the obesity crisis is worsening and becoming more of an issue, with daylight savings there is extra daylight time in the evenings when you get home from work to be able to do physical activities and to be more active. Isn't this in itself a positive reason for Daylight Savings, besides all the other issues raised by other comments?
The daylight savings issue is just another reason why QLD is viewed as being at least 10 - 20 years behind the rest of the country.

Why we can't just stay as we are beats the shit out of me. We don't have to have daylight savings just because the other states do. Leave it alone!
Posted by Carly Tuesday 7 October, 2008 10:02 AM
If it is so difficult to cope with the time difference between Qld & the southern states during daylight saving, why can so many businesses cope with dealing with overseas, WA, NT & SA time differences? Yes it would be easier to be on the same time, but it's not essential - people have to deal with time differences to other states & countries throughout the year.
Incidentally, the only ones who are complaining about their curtains fading (except facetiously) are those complaining about people using that excuse not to have daylight saving time. In other words, people against daylight saving time are not using those arguments.
Me, I lived through the trials. I didn't find it better or worse. I really couldn't care less one way or another, though I would prefer not to have it. But it can't come in as a split system - that's arrogant & condescending on the part of the people proposing it. Either that, or people outside the SE corner are better able to cope with the dual time, while those within SE Qld can't. And yes, I do deal with both overseas & interstate - & can cope easily.

Well, considering Anna Bligh's popularity, she has to start doing something soon. We got fluoridation (welcome to the 19th century) - maybe Daylight Saving TIme is coming. Will the other side bring it in? The sooner the better.
Posted by David Seamans Wednesday 8 October, 2008 06:42 AM
why should we be the ones to change. qld has always done things differently and why do we need to follow everyone else. maybe try getting up an hour earlier, and do things then. it's also cooler in the morning. we need to look at things in a new light, say out of the box perhaps. i start at 6 in the morning on shifts, and don't want to start at 5 just to line up with the mexicans down south.
Posted by robert Wednesday 8 October, 2008 09:26 PM
it is so crazy not to have daylight savings, cause we could do so much more after we got home from work, like mowing, even get a load of washing done & dried before 9pm. we could enjoy the weekeends a lot more instead of doing the boring chores.
Posted by lynnette visser Thursday 9 October, 2008 10:41 AM
If anyone decides who they are going to vote for based solely on daylight savings, they don't deserve to vote. People like that are exactly what is wrong with society.
Posted by Jimmy dale Thursday 9 October, 2008 02:17 PM
I love not having daylight savings. You still have the same amount of light. I'm up at 4:30 enjoying the best part down the beach not having to put up with crowds, before the heat sets in, pure bliss, . I have children they have to go to bed at 7:30pm be it daylight savings or not. In summer with day light savings it is still hot and light as it is really 6:30 and daylight great for going to bed. Leave the day light savings alone get up earlier if you really want to enjoy the day. I enjoy 4 hours before I go to work. I certainly wouldn't spend this time after work

I moved here from nsw for the reason of NO DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME,for those who want daylight savings go back to the southern states and leave queensland the way it is .Another option if you want extra daylight get up earlier! NO DAYLIGHT SAVINGS, NEVER.

Why is it that nearly all australians have turned into sheep and have to follow what everyone else does, baa baa baa baa! if it ain't broke don't fix it . leave eastern standard time as it is.

We should have daylight savings to keep up with the rest of the world. This is something that happens in other countries as well as Australia. I'm sure the cows will get used to it and the curtains won't fade (some of the bs Joh used to argue). Businesses really suffer as they lose 2 working hours every day when dealing with southerners. It's about time we caught up with the rest of the country.

People need understand that most Australians live and work in Urban Temperate Centres, which are the economic workhorse of Australia. The health and well-being is important for these people hence having or introducing Daylight savings. There are many advantages, able to spend recreational daylight hours with family and friends after work or school, exercising under less UV in the morning and late afternoon evening. Plus being light later in the evening with DST, creates a sense of security for men and women on urban streets. There are also convincing environmental reasons for daylight saving time. Daylight saving has been introduced into many countries in an attempt to save energy. Governments and citizens of the day need to seize the opportunity and embrace positive effects of what Daylight Savings has to offer. As for the time difference between BNE-SYD-MEL most investment has been made by these companies coming up from down South and creating jobs. But the people that work in these companies have to put in an extra hour each day to cover DST down south. Mostly having that hour unpaid
