Spoony has come out with his top five tunes of all time. Have a look at the video and tell us what you think of his picks.
Has Spoony got good taste in music?
There are some pretty left field songs in his list. Do you agree with his top five?
Or can you do better?

Nice top 5 Spoony!
Especially Eulogy!
Posted by Jamie Thursday 2 October, 2008 07:56 PM
Good choices. Eulogy and Kashmir especially.
My tastes include a fair bit of metal, so I'd include something like "The Philosopher" by Death in my top 5. I don't suppose many people would agree with me there but that's death metal for you.
As with you I'd have to go some Tool, perhaps something like Forty-Six & 2 or The Grudge.
I think I'll leave it there because as you say, it's pretty hard to chop it down to 5 definitive tracks.

Ah you explaining on air that it was actually the other way around makes much more sense!

Excellent choice for your number 2 song (even thought it says #4 but i remember u said to flip the script on that list) there Spoony.
Aenima is easily my favourite album of all time and the album which opened my mind to a wider array of music and genres as weird as that sounds.
Just picking 1 song off that album is like pickin' your favourite kid so any choice from that was a good one.
Awesome taste in music spoonman.
Tool are legends. Have you checked out A Perfect Circle and Puscifer and if so what do you think of them?
Not as good as tool but still incredible. I'm sure you have. and if you havn't they are the side projects of the lead singer of Tool, Maynard James Keenan.
Posted by Wade Friday 3 October, 2008 12:20 AM
Great to see the variety there.
Tool are awesome!!
Posted by Jaz Friday 3 October, 2008 12:22 AM
Hey guys, this was seriously hard, given my fairly eclectic music tastes...
In fact I'd struggle to put together a top hundred songs that would be truly representative.
I'm thinking now about a top 5 Oz songs list, which I'll post when I cull it down.
Assistance always appreciated....

Hey spoony must be honest and say im only young and have not heard of some of these songs ( Ive had a deprived life i know) but i will find them and listen to them for sure because from being a big fan of the show your choice of music rocks.
Keep up the good work. Cheers Doug.

I'd probably say "Heartbreaker" or "Nobody's Fault But Mine" for Led Zep, but either way the Led have to be in the top five somewhere, no matter the song (unless it's something dodgy like The Rain Song). Or "Hey Hey What Can I Do" by them, that's a pretty sweet song.
I'd probably say Aenima by Tool. Eulogy's a good song, but I can't go past the title track. But good choice putting them in, but I wouldn't chuck them in my top five. Top fifteen, hell yeah, but not my top five.
I'm surprised there's no Rolling Stones in there - "Heartbreaker", "Rocks Off" or "Bitch" are great.
The Cure I like heaps but again like Tool not in my top five. And again, I like "Close To Me" by The Cure, which I hate to say is a more well known song than what you have mentioned (which makes me feel like I'm following the mainstream a bit, but I do like Close To Me).
I'd have to put The Black Keys in there, definitely. They're probably my all time favourite band - "All Hands Against His Own", "Thickfreakness", "Set You Free", "Hard Row", "Midnight In Her Eyes", "Everywhere I Go", "Stack Shot Billy", "10 A.M Automatic", "Remember When (Side B)", "I Got Mine", "So He Won't Break" - they've got so much good stuff it'd be hard to get anything other than them in my top five (but for organizational sake I'd just put one in).
Maybe something with Jack White in it, The White Stripes or The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes is an alright song but not a top five. Icky Thump is probably their best ever album - you could pick almost any track off that and put it in my top five.
The Living End have to be in there somewhere. I don't like their most recent album anywhere near as much as their older ones, but something by them should take the cake. Maybe "From Here On In".
I'm fifteen now so I don't know the other two bands you mentioned because it's hard to find music from around then that wasn't mainstream (I'll go and try listen to them now). I'm just hoping that it's not music from now you were talking about though, because that'll make me look a bit stupid.
The Hives could be in there - they've got some pretty catchy tunes. Or if more heavy stuff is put in, "With A Thousand Words To Say But One" is a pretty good song, with good lyrics as well. Or "Sugar Wolf" by From Autumn To Ashes.
Some other songs that deserve a mention:
"Shadow of the Season" - Screaming Trees
This song is awesome - my favourite by them. The vocals are so good with the song and the constant guitar riff over the top - just definitely should be there somewhere.
"Machinehead" - Bush
Actually off a new album but still keeps that grunge sound that you got in the 90s going. One of the few bands I know that do that.
"Ocean"/"Alive" - Pearl Jam
Don't know the exact title to this one, but it's off the documentary about Eddie Vedder and his friend Laird - great song. And Alive just because it's such a classic and has one of the best solos in guitar solo history.
- Buddy Guy
I'd like to say a single song by him but him live is about a billion times better than his recorded stuff, which I'm not that big a fan of. But him live is great.
"King of The Rodeo" - Kings of Leon
This or Molly's Chambers - two great songs - they've got a pretty unique sound.
"Get Free" - The Vines
A bit of everything in there, a bit of Nirvana (I know people say that for like everything now, but the song's a bit like them), a bit of McCartney - great song.
"Where Is My Mind" - The Pixies
Your Spoony Tune a few nights ago. One of my all time favourites, should be up there.
"Burn To Shine" - Ben Harper
Just a classic riff and a classic chorus. Sounds so simple, too, I love it.
"Takin' A Ride" - The Replacements
Rock at its finest.
But I get where you're coming from when you say it'd be hard to pick your top whatever of anything related to music because you always forget something really good. Obviously you're better at narrowing songs down than me. But good on you for making this. And what happened to the long hair dude!? But good on you like the person above said for putting variety in.

what spoony? No Metallica at all?
It's pretty left field but its your top 5 and I appreciate it. With the OZ top 5 im thinking something from the Easybeats or The Saints would be cool.

I loved the song you played last night.. it was just so chunky and awesome. Up until last night I didn't think that electric music could sound so good. Please send a list of songs or artists that sound like that because now I can't get enough of it!
As for my top 5, here they are:
5. Megadeth - Lucretia
I dunno.. the opening riff gets me hooked right away. Check this out.
4. Testament - Souls of Black
Another Thrash classic
3. Guns and Roses - Locomotive
My favourite off UUI2.
2. Silverchair - Freak
I keep going back to their older material and loving it.
1. Metallica - One
Enough said =)

hey spoony,
some interesting choices you have there. some stuff i would not have expected and was expecting some others to be there that didnt make it. but i guess like the gq top 50 (crock) everyones has different ideas but this has made me realise that no matter how you think you might have someones ideas pinned down you rarely do.
anyway now to my top 5 -
1. My Hometown by Bruce Springsteen. He always amazes me with the amount of emotion he seems to be able to impart to a song.
2. NYC Song by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band (Off the soundtack to Eddie and the Cruisers 2. This particular movie had a classic line about what is intense and if you have ever seen the movie you will know what im talking about. Parts 1 and 2 are well worth the watch.
3. Gimmie Some Lovin' by The Spencer Davis Group (akin to your number 4 choice this is a song i dont think i could ever become sick of hearing)
3. Jane Says by Janes Addiction (has to be the live version though, Perry Farrels voice on this particular track is amazing)
5. The Immigrant Song by Led Zepplin (do i need to say more?)
well thats mine but as you said this was something that was extremely hard to refine and even now i am still warring over choices. you look at the list and think hmm maybe i should put this song in instead but i will chalk this in as my final 5. appreciate any thoughts you might have on my choices.

Hey Spoony - me again.
I heard that song by the Crystal Method on the radio as your Spoony Tune - I'd have to say it wouldn't be anywhere near my top five. Not because I don't like techno - I don't like music because of genres or the instruments used.
Take "Not Beautiful Anymore" by Porcupine Tree - that could be in some ways considered techno. But that song just really didn't get to me.
Posted by Andy Sunday 5 October, 2008 08:24 PM
What a shame you are not in charge of the music dept at Triple M.
Just for the record and in case anyone cares my 5 are:
Bush: Everyhing Zen
Greenday: Longview
Pearl Jam: ALive
Tool: Stinkfist
New Order: Bizzare Love Triangle
YES I WAS A CHILD OF THE 90s!
Posted by milo Monday 6 October, 2008 04:46 PM
Very nice range of song choices, good sir.
Some of my five are also rather left field.
5. Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd - the music is beautifully composed, and extremely nostalgic to me.
4. Whiskey in the Wall - it's by a young local band around Brisbane called The Rogues. I told Garfield about them. They sound a lot like the Ramones. They have a whole bunch of awesome, rocky songs, but this is my favourite. Myspace them.
3. In The End by Linkin Park, only because I reckon it's incredibly epic.
2. Sunsets - I am a huge Powderfinger song, so I really reckon that anything by Powderfinger is brilliant. I just picked a song that came first out of my head.
1. How to Build A Home - its from a musical group named The Cinematic Orchestra. The song is basically consisted of a string orchestra and a piano, but it's my all time favourite song. You would have heard it on the Shwepps ads - the one with the slow motion balloon explosions. I highly recommend you play it, despite the fact that it is not rock at all.
Posted by Haze Monday 6 October, 2008 09:23 PM
Sorry Spoony, but I can only agree with only your top two song as being anywhere in my top 50s. But then I suppose its a matter of individual taste. My top 5s are-
1. Hypnotize- System of a Down.
2. Another Brick in the Wall- Pink Floyd.
3. Whatsername- Green Day.
4. Broken, Beat and Scarred- Metallica /TNT- ACDC
5. In the Summertime- Thirsty Merc.

Ok, my top 5:
1)Enter Sandman(S&M version)
2)Kashmir
3)Master of puppets
4)Holier than thou
5)Change the world (the Offspring, just in case :P)
Yes, i know, i love metallica, \m/
God that was freaking hard...

(Request, of wolf and man by metallica, please!Oh wait, could you possibly do a metallica night? That would kick ass, think about it?)

i cnat find it now but its on youtube somewhere. I recommend it 100%

Kashmir at Number One - you won't get too many arguments about that...
Tool at No. 2 is a good choice. This song in particular is just magnificent - Tool really do have just a fantastic sound.
Interesting choice of song from The Cure - as a band I'd understand them being in a Top 5, but that's a strange choice of song. Not a bad choice, but not 'orthodox', I guess.
Hadn't heard much of Ride, but I agree they are good. Not my Top 5 style personally, but again I can understand your like for it.
Crystal Method is another left-field choice, showing your "eclectic" taste in music. I think you've done well to fit so many different types of sounds in to 5 songs.
Now mine (like you say, this is a really tough task):
1. Metallica - The Unforgiven
The song that got me into rock music. Has a magical quality about it that just captivated me on first hearing it - still my absolute favourite.
2. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Could have put any of about 20+ Floyd songs in here, but for a perfect description of their music, I say this song takes it. Not a heavy sound, very refined and well crafted with a solo from David Gilmour that demonstrates the sheer talent possessed by those musicians. Just brilliant.
3. Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
As you said so well, a song you could listen to every day for the rest of your life and still love it no less. Again, just magnificent music work, complimented beautifully by Plant's vocals. Quite definitely Zeppelin's finest work (which is saying something)
4. The Butterfly Effect - Reach
One of the few more modern bands I enjoy listening to, and this song really shows why. A beautiful sound to it - sometimes rock, sometimes slow and meaningful, always beautiful. Fantastic instrumentals topped off with Clint Boge's magnificent vocals - one of the few modern songs likely to be remembered (at least by me) in years to come.
5. Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
In my opinion, Maiden's most complete work. Takes some of their breakneck metal guitar work and mixes it with fantastic songwriting, giving at that 'class above the rest' feel. Just another one I always love hearing.

G'day Spoondaddy!
I'm still pondering my top 5 songs of all time... a ponderous task if you're broaching all genres here. I will get back to you.
But in terms of Aussie tracks... here is a smattering.. all compete for my top placings...
Dirty Deeds - AC/DC
Star Hotel - Cold Chisel
To Her Door - Paul Kelly
Tomorrow - Silverchair
Love Your Way - Powderfinger
Burn For You/Just Keep Walking - INXS
Electric Blue - Icehouse (... yeah perhaps a little embarassing...)
Good Dancers - The Sleepy Jackson
White Unicorn - Wolfmother
Of course we're discounting everything Finn as well, to be purists.
But at the top of the pile, surely, has to be...
The Church.
I cannot separate The Unguarded Moment and Under the Milky Way Tonight. No superlatives suffice.

Posted by Brian Thursday 6 November, 2008 11:10 PM
Spooney, I've gotta say, why have you left out the Doors?
Anyway this is my top five songs ever!!!!!
1. The End (The Doors)
2. Welcome to the Jungle (Guns and Roses)
3. Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
4. Enter Sandman (Metallica)
5. Back in Black (AC/DC)
I chose these songs because off the way they make me feel.
The End is extremely powerful and moving.
The second song just makes me wanna jump around my bedroom like an absolute idiot! It's the best rock song known to man!
The third song is a musical masterpiece!
Enter Sandman is just like the GnR song, it just makes you unleash this rock god that hides in you until the those sweet guitar strings hit your ears!
The final song is just a good Aussie rock song that everyone knows even if they don't like that type of music, but how could you not like it?
I hope one day you can play these songs when you get the chance to, thanks Spoony.
