The World Cup made us traitors
Posted by Oh Errol Friday 21 November, 2008 10:13 AM

The Rugby League World Cup finishes up this weekend and we are completely confused. Not by the idea of a grand final - we're daft but not that daft - and not even by the rules. We are all over the 40-20 rule and defining obstruction. We're confused about the important stuff, like, who the hell are we meant to barrack for?
Yes, we are proud little Australians. You could search this wide brown land of ours and never find a more patriotic twosome. We even bawled like little bitches in those cheesy Qantas ads during the Olympics. (We love you Liesel!)
But this isn't the Olympics. When it comes to footy, there is something more important than being Australian, and kiddies, that thing is State of Origin. We might be Aussie but our blood runs a beautiful shade of NSW blue.
And when we look at the Kangaroos in their green and gold jerseys, all we see is maroon. Billy Slater, Greg Inglis, Cameron Smith, Johnathon Thurston ... um, does anyone have any gin? Look, we have honestly tried. We even went to opening match between Australia and New Zealand at the Sydney Footy Stadium. But despite our best efforts, when we tried to clap for Brent Tate's try, our hands repelled like ... things that repel. YOU CAN'T ARGUE WITH SCIENCE PEOPLE.
The truth is the only Queenslander we can stand is Scott Prince, and that's because he is completely adorable and caramelly delicious. Also, Steve Price. He likes bucket hats. How can you hate a man in a bucket hat?
So the question is this: do we cheer for the Aussies, knowing they are a team of hateful Queenslanders who stole State of Origin and have no souls? Does it help that Tate has been ruled out of the team? Or do we jump ship and support the Kiwis, who do a fierce haka, but are, sadly, still New Zealanders. What do we do?
HELP.

I'm choosing to ignore your hate for all things Queenslander, so that we can can continue to live long and happy lives together.

Choosing between Queenlanders and Kiwis is like picking between Manly and the Storm - what did you guys do for that?
It's just an ugly sad time for league - i recommend you watch the Union instead and cheer for NSW's Chris Ryan and Timana Tahu as they play for the Wallabies - at least that way you'll know for sure that you hate the French more esp given that they've taken Gasnier and the dirtiest of kiwis Sonny Bill.
UNION? are you mocking us gus? I refuse to watch union in case it indirectly encourages sonny bill (boo hissss).
I agree with you manly-storm was a tough choice though. SO TOUGH. In the end I went Manly because how can you not love the beav?

Perfectly said Gus. Although, like Manly and Storm, I'm going for no-one. I will however cheer for delightful chaps such as Monaghan, Williams and Fitzgibbon, and 'accidentally' forget to cheer for the rest.
I will keep three scoreboards even. Man I can't wait 'til Origin 09.
Ladies - do what I will do and cheer for the blues boys (slash rangas)

Good idea Josh. My advice is cheer for the players that you like from both teams.
It may send you bipolar but it will certainly confuse the crowd around you. I am a longtime Errol reader and love the lolz.

Good points about the caintoads, but remember, they all bow to and are controlled by our very own Ricky Stewart - a true blue - blue!

The RL World Cup was the biggest farce I have even seen...glad the Kiwi's beat us as the whole concept of this event was crap.

I tried to Kanagaboo, but then i ended up Kangacheering and then they lost!
Felt so sad for Laffranchi, and Davey and Monas and Glenn Stewart, but then i saw Jonathon Thurston all sad and it made me lol... Go Nathan Cayless!
Keep up the funnies girls!! xx

As others before me have said, I just went for the players I like. And by that I mean Fitzy and Monas. They're the only ones out of Origin this year I cheered for too.
